Nappy Rash

Be in control of Nappy Rash with a few tips!

Most of us will agree that babies can be delightful little creatures. But we all know they can also go through their bad patches ヨ endless crying, teething problems, infections ヨ these can all get the parents down. One common condition that probably most babies would have experienced at some time is nappy rash.

Although nappy rash can be rather discomforting for a baby, the good news is that it can be treated and also prevented by following a few tips.

Nappy rash can be anything from a mildly red bottom to one with severe swelling and blistered broken skin. Sometimes nappy rash can become infected with thrush (candida) which looks like a red, shiny rash with scaly edges. With thrush babies skin folds are also affected.
Nappy rash is usually caused when your babyメs skin becomes irritated by urine or bowel motions and the skin is left wet and airless for a while.

Other things that could also cause nappy rash are new foods that you may have introduced recently or chemicals found in laundry powder or nappies.

Mild nappy rash can be easily treated with products from your Self Care pharmacist.

"Barrier creams and ointments help prevent nappy rash from occurring by water proofing the skin," advise Self Care pharmacists. "If your babyメs skin is not broken, then for a short term you can thinly apply a cream called hydrocortisone cream to help reduce the redness." If your babyメs rash looks red, shiny and scaly he or she probably has thrush. Your Self Care pharmacist can suggest an antifungal cream to treat this infection. You should use this cream for at least a week after the infection has cleared so you can prevent the rash coming back.

There are also some simple tips, perhaps tried and true from our grandmotherメs times, that can help prevent your baby from getting nappy rash:

- change your babyメs nappies often so there is minimum contact of urine and bowel motions with his or her skin;
- if wet wipes irritate your babyメs skin, use a soft wet cloth or wet cotton wool instead;
- use soaps and baby washes that are not perfumed so your babyメs skin is not irritated;
- rinse nappies two or three times so there is no laundry powder residue left;
- leave your baby without a nappy as often as you can. Fresh air helps the skin breathe and heal faster. But remember donメt leave your baby exposed to the sun as their skin can burn easily.
