A summer time bug.
モFood poisoning from barbecues (BBQ) is a common cause of vomiting and diarrhoea,ヤ say Self Care Pharmacists. モThe warm weather usually gets the blame and itメs true ヨ heat does tend to make food go off faster and eating food infected with bacteria can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.ヤ Uncooked food left out in the heat too long can pick up bacteria easily.
Most of the time it tends to be the ム24-hour bugメ and the symptoms tend to go away within a day. It is only a problem if you start to feel worse and the symptoms are still there two or three days later. You are best to see the doctor at this stage.
The biggest problem with vomiting and diarrhoea is dehydration and it can get serious in children and elderly people. Dehydration drains the body of fluids and important electrolytes which can lead to serious problems if not treated quickly.
There are medicines available that help to relieve symptoms of diarrhoea and your Self Care pharmacist can advise you about these. Although children under 12 months are usually too young to enjoy the summer BBQ, they can still develop diarrhoea and vomiting if they eat any food that is infected with bacteria or drink milk that has been left out in the heat for too long.
モTake children under 12 months of age with severe diarrhoea or vomiting to a doctor. They can become dehydrated very quickly because their bodies have little water to start with,ヤ caution Self Care Pharmacists. モSome danger signs of dehydration are a very dry mouth, reduced skin elasticity and sunken eyes and fontanelle.ヤ
The best way to avoid dehydration is to drink plenty of water or any fluids such as mild tea or diluted fruit juices. Your pharmacist can provide you with special drinks that replace important electrolytes (salts) lost from the body with diarrhoea and vomiting. It is best to give babies these electrolyte supplements. Summerメs heat also means you sweat a lot and can become dehydrated in this way too. モDrink lots of fluids, especially water, to avoid dehydration,ヤ suggest Self Care Pharmacists.
Some tips to prevent vomiting or diarrhoea in your home this summer - leave meats to defrost in the fridge, not on the bench, and keep milk in the fridge at all times. Cook barbecued foods, especially chicken and other poultry, until the juices are no longer pink to avoid any risk of infection.
